Nurture
Nurture Room
Our Nurture room at Harmony Primary is called the Sunshine room and is led by Mrs Davidson and Miss Sayers
The Sunshine Room is designed to be a bridge between home and school; a place where children can feel safe and secure and therefore develop their individual needs further. The room is set up in such a way that it resembles a home. There is a living-room area with a couch and cushions; a dining area for snack and a working area for pupils to carry out their activities. There are also lots of resources and areas to encourage play. It is set up in this way to provide the pupils with opportunities to learn, to explore strategies and to develop skills in a calm, comforting and safe environment.
Nurture Group Philosophy
Nurture Group is a small class of pupils. Its composition is carefully thought-out to create a balanced and functional group.
The philosophy of the Nurture Room is drawn from the principles established by the work of Marjorie Boxall and others and exemplified by ‘The Nurture Group Network’ (www.nurturegroups.org).
The Nurture Group Principles:
- Children’s learning is understood developmentally
- The classroom offers a safe base
- All behaviour is communication
- The importance of transition in children's lives
- Has small adult/child ratio, and provides lots of opportunities for speaking and listening activities
- Builds a child’s self-esteem and confidence
- Builds skills for classroom learning
- Has daily crafts, games, a ‘mini-tea’ and more
- Language is a vital means of communication
